Are You Ready To Go International?
Although North Americans were the dominant population on the Internet, that has now changed, and the rest of the world has caught up rapidly. And while English is still the most widely used Internet language, it’s not the language of choice for many, many Internet users.
So are YOU ready to communicate in this international medium? Whether you’re building your own Web site, taking part in discussion groups, visiting a chat room, or just sending and receiving e-mail, you’ll meet more and more “foreigners” on the Internet - and vice versa, of course.
Let’s look at some tips for communicating effectively in this new global village.
1. Write in plain English
Write clearly, with small words and short sentences. If you’re writing long messages or creating long Web pages, include a simple summary at the top.
Be very careful to write exactly what you mean. If you’re writing for a general audience, avoid sarcasm, colloquialisms and other things that rely on a certain tone of voice or cultural background.
2. Watch out for phrases with two meanings
Although English is the de facto international language of the Internet, differences abound between, say, English and American English. It’s easy enough to allow for differences in the way that we spell “colour”, “apologise” and “organisation”, but other - more subtle - differences can easily lead to misunderstandings.
For example, does “bi-weekly” mean twice a week or once every two weeks? It’s different for Australians and Americans. Similarly, when Australians “table an issue”, they are raising it for discussion, but for Americans, “tabling an issue” means putting it aside.

If you’re selling anything through e-mail or your Web site, cater for international orders, whether you expect them or not. Find out the cost of international postage and shipping, and publish the costs for your customers.

Traveling with children can be fun as well as very trying. Our family has been traveling with our children since the children were babies. Our children are in their middle school years now, but over the years we have come up with some fun travel activities that keep the children’s attention and teach them something in the process.
While on long trips, it can be very tempting to use the portable DVD player to provide entertainment for your children, and don’t think for a minute that we don’t use that form of entertainment…. for parts of long trips…. but there are so many simple, fun games that you can play with your children that will help make the trip smoother and more enjoyable. Here are some examples of activities that we have used to make travel time smoother.
One of my children’s favorite games is what my husband calls “Toss Ups”. In Toss Ups, my husband simply tosses questions up. For instance, “Who was the first president of the United States of America?” or “If I had 5 apples, and I gave 3 apples to Tom , how many apples do I have now?” Now, as you can see, the questions can be very simple depending on your children’s ages. If you have a larger age span between children, you might toss up general questions to all, but throw in…. Now, this toss up is just for Adam… and then ask a question tailored for the younger child. This game was a huge hit with our children when they were ages two through five, but even now that they are 11 and 13, every now and then we hear – Hey Daddy – give us some toss ups…. Believe me, trying to come up with questions for smart middle-schoolers is tough!!
Lately, we have tailored the game of “Going on a trip” to our family. “Going on a trip” is a fun game where everyone in the car tells that they are going on a trip and bringing something along. That “something” has to begin with the first letter of the person’s name. You keep going along in that fashion until everyone guesses the first letter - first name connection. Now that our children are older, we have adapted that game to a pretty intricate game of logic…. For instance…. “I am going on a trip, and I am bringing an apple, a banana, and a cat.” The next person might then say (if they know the correct connection) “I am going on a trip, and I am bringing a mop, and napkin, and an octopus.” The play continues until everyone gets the connection. In this case, it was that all of the things that I am bringing start with consecutive letters of the alphabet. The person who begins each game selects the connection.

5 Tips For Anyone Who Is Considering Being An Expatriate
Every year many thousands of people decide to move overseas permanently and to make a new life for themselves in a new country. For a lot of these people this will be one of the best decisions that they have ever made, but for a number of other people their dream rapidly turns into a nightmare. Below are just a small selection of the numerous things that you will have to consider.
� Make certain that you really do want to move overseas permanently.
It is a simple fact that the grass is always greener on the other side and it is all too easy to conjure up a heavenly picture of life in the country of your choice. But, when you arrive, you may well discover that the grass is now much greener back at home. It is also usually the case that your picture of a foreign country when you are a holidaymaker is quite different from that when you are a resident.
Not only should you visit the country a number of times before you make any decision to live there, but you must do so at differing times of year and for increasingly lengthy periods of time. You also have to try 'living' in the country by renting a house or condo and living as far as possible as you would as a resident rather than a holidaymaker. If you still think that moving is the correct choice after you have spent a few months or so 'living' in the country, then it is a fair bet that you will not regret your decision.

Some directories rate hotels who recycles; uses updated water-saving toilets and shower heads; educate their staff and guests about the environment; uses alternative sources of energy such as biomass, solar or wind systems; donates to the community; participates or have received certification from green programs, etc.

Continental Airlines have replaced their fleet with more efficient fuel-saving aircrafts reducing emissions by up to 5. They also have a full-time of environmentalists dedicated to helping the company improve their terminals and track carbon emissions and chemical recycling.
Virgin Air has focused their attention to using bio-fuels and to eventually wean themselves off fossil fuels. The founder, Richard Branson, has dedicated all his airline profits for the next ten years to global warming research (estimated $3 billion).
There are also CO2 emissions calculators available allowing you to pay a little extra to offset the carbon emissions generated from the flight. That money then goes to research, invested in environmentally-friendly projects and/or renewable resources. A great resource is Sustainable Travel International (STI). Many car rental agencies in America are still behind when it comes to offering hybrids. EV Rental in California and Arizona and Bio-Beetle in Hawaii are great if you're travelling in those areas. This is also a great way to test hybrids if you're thinking of buying a car in the future.

When the weather is good, enjoying the Icelandic outback is a world-class experience. Iceland is also a very modern place so you can enjoy all the amenities you are accustomed to. So, as I mentioned, if you are interested in visiting this beautiful land, here are some of the negatives you may want to be aware of.
First off I must mention the weather. Iceland’s weather is notoriously capricious. You can literally have four seasons in one day. That’s not just hyperbole; I have experienced it for myself. Also, it is almost never really warm. The average summer temperature is somewhere in the mid-to-high 50s. That isn’t to say that on occasion it can’t get warmer, that’s just the average. It can also rain in Iceland – a lot. You could go there and have rain for the whole vacation. So, come prepared for wind and rain and wear layers so you can modulate your temperature as the circumstance dictates.
The second big issue is that Iceland is galactically expensive. Food is three to four times the cost compared to America. This can come as a real shock for US visitors who are used to cheap food.
